Dubai Creek Harbour, UAE.
Dubai Creek Harbour, United Arab Emirates.
Multiple mixed use, iconic destination masterplan.
Project aspect, retail district, in excess of 900,000 m² retail space.
The retail district of Dubai Creek Harbour is designed to replicate the layout of a traditionally developed cityscape comprising a series of connected streets and blocks as found in major cities throughout the world.
The challenge is to create a new urban mass comprising all the characteristics of a city that has developed over time within a new build construction project maximising efficiency, yet delivering stimulating variety in the streetscape.
The retail district is located above vast areas of underground parking, so the structural integration between economic parking layout and the building grids above is a key fundamental. Being located in such a tempered location, the streets were to be enclosed to provide a temperature controlled environment which would allow the network of streets to function normally. The integration of support for the roof structure into the building grids is critical to accommodate the technical requirements without dominating the skyline.
With an optimised structural grid and building frame, it was possible to facilitate effective and efficient construction that would allow for building facades with diverse variety that would replicate the feel of unique buildings that had been constructed individually over time.
The strategy was to create a number of standard but variable façade types that with creative manipulation could deliver a completely varied streetscape from a well designed series of options based on the principal of 'complexity from simplicity'. Peter's role was to develop this strategy from the initial concept requirements so that the design intent could be delivered in an economic and efficient way.
