2003-2004 - Modernisation and Refurbishment.

The Triangle (formerly Corn Exchange) was badly damaged by a bomb blast in 1996 and had subsequently been restored. The 2003 project was to integrate the inside of the shopping centre to Exchange Square. The interior was reconfigured and modernized with a series of comprehensive structural alterations where a modern contemporary retail environment complemented the historic building.
In the central atrium, the 'Sci-Fi' Sky Bar structure stood magnificently as the central 'Jewel in the Crown'. Peter took the original concept design idea and developed the full technical design working out how to detail and construct this complicated structure in such a challenging space. The structure was modular and every piece had to be brought into the building through a single door set in the basement.
A special self-erecting crane had to be obtained that could enter the same way yet be suitable to build the sky bar. Peter chose to work with Midas Technologies to undertake the project and developed the detail design directly with Midas. It is though such detailed design collaboration with specialist sub-contractors that such creative work can be created in a very efficient way.
The listed façade also had one of the first large video displays on a building to be constructed facing the public Amphitheatre in Exchange Square. The new structure supporting the screen could only attach to the building where it had been damaged in the bomb blast and not come into contact with the historic fabric of the building. Peter was responsible for negotiations with the Planning Department to get the permission, with the BBC on their technical requirements and the structural engineers to resolve a technical solution.
